Blow Off Silencer
Blow Off Silencers (BOS) are sometimes also called “bafflers” or “silencer kits”. They are intended to improve the sound and performance characteristics of an exhaust system by capturing and diverting the exhaust pressure wave to the atmosphere.
A blow off silencer is a device that reduces noise from an engine, via a small opening in the end of an exhaust pipe. It is usually built into turbochargers to prevent compressor stall when excessive throttle is applied during rapid acceleration or heavy loads such as during driving up hills. Blow Off Silencers are also sometimes used on car engines to reduce the volume of engine noise heard inside passenger compartment or outside the vehicle.
BOS systems are typically limited to off-road applications because they create excessive back pressure in most normal on-road vehicles. They also require an aftermarket exhaust system or a properly tuned engine computer (ECU) to work properly, as the factory ECU is not configured to divert exhaust flow through the BOS.
A blow off silencer is a type of muffler for use in conjunction with a compressor to reduce the sound generated when air expands in the cylinders.
An automobile blow off valve or BOV is an open-circuit hydraulic valve on turbocharged and supercharged engines which regulates the flow of air that enters the engine’s intake system and reduces pressure in the intake manifold, especially during periods of high engine load such as overrun, when not enough air would otherwise be available to keep up with demand.
A blow off valve is sometimes called a “bypass valve”.
A silencer is a device that reduces the sound of gunshots from a firearm. The term “silencer” is well-known to be used in Hollywood movies and it has become a popular accessory for guns. But, the real purpose of this device is to allow people to shoot without being detected by their enemies.
The name “silencer” comes from the fact that it reduces the noise created when firing a gun. A combustion engine’s exhaust pipe muffler works on the same principle- reducing sound by slowing down air flow.
